By Denise Holcomb, Founder & Executive Director of Removing The Stigma

On July 16, 2022 the simple, three-digit number 988 became available for those in need. People can call or text 988 which will connect them to the 800 number, allowing faster intervention.

There is hope that switching to 988 will make it easier for those in crisis to access the help they need and decrease the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers which provides free and confidential emotional support in the form of prevention and resources to those in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Those needing help can call the 800 Lifeline at  988, 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or message through the online chat:

https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/.

Veterans and Service members can reach the Veterans Crisis Line by pressing 1 after dialing or chatting at www.veteranscrisisline.net or by texting 838255.
