In the election primary that happened early this Tuesday, March 19, there was lower voter turnout compared to previous primaries. This pattern occurs in all counties.

WEWS/OCJ Statehouse reporter Morgan Trau, through analyzing Board of Election data, found that turnout had dropped by about 50%. Cuyahoga, Franklin, Stark, Hamilton, and almost all other major counties, along with the rural ones, have seen a decline.

The cause of this low turnout? Well, it is most likely because of the uncompetitive primary. Many voters do not like to see a Trump v. Biden rematch and feel that it is unnecessary to vote. However, the problem with this is that there were still city issues, judges, and senate seats to be voted on. Exercising the right to vote is a fundamental part of the democratic process, and if people don’t care enough to vote, it could have consequences.

It will be interesting to see turnout numbers for the presidential election on Nov. 5, 2024.
