About The Cleveland Observer
Our Mission
The Cleveland Observer is a nonprofit, community-driven newsroom dedicated to delivering independent, in-depth journalism that serves the Greater Cleveland area. Our goal is to amplify underrepresented voices, foster civic engagement, and ensure transparency in local governance. We believe that access to reliable, well-researched information is essential to building an informed and engaged community. By focusing on stories that matter, we strive to empower residents to take an active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods and city.
How It Started
The Cleveland Observer began as a response to a challenge from a local politician to improve communication within the community and open the lines of dialogue between Cleveland’s political and community leaders, organizations, and residents. Out of this challenge, Ronald Calhoun founded the Ward 7 Observer, a publication designed to bridge the communication gap and create a trusted source of local news. As the publication gained acceptance and credibility, its reach expanded beyond Ward 7 into other Cleveland neighborhoods. This substantial growth led to the rebranding of the publication as the Cleveland Observer, a citywide initiative designed to foster stronger connections within Cleveland’s urban communities and surrounding inner-ring suburbs. Today, the Cleveland Observer remains committed to serving as a platform for meaningful civic engagement and information-sharing.
