The Denmark Tibbs Family Foundation Partners with College Now to Create HBCU Scholarship Fund for CMSD Students

[Cleveland, Ohio] – The Denmark Tibbs Family Foundation has proudly established the Denmark Tibbs HBCU Scholarship Fund in partnership with College Now Greater Cleveland. The Fund will award two (2) $1,250 scholarships to two (2) students enrolling at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Fall 2022 and is renewable for up to three (3) years.

Created in honor of Imani Tibbs’ 29th birthday, the Family’s deep love of HBCUs inspired the Denmark Tibbs HBCU Scholarship Fund. “Make no mistake, Howard University transformed me,” says Imani, but HBCUs began impacting her decades earlier when her grandfather and grandmother met as students at Tuskegee University and Alabama State University, respectively. “There was always this culture of excellence and pride in our heritage that I felt growing up, this push for Black enterprises, and a mindset that knew no limits,” Imani continues. This is the legacy the Family hopes to promote through the Denmark Tibbs HBCU Scholarship Fund.

To be eligible, students must:

• be an African American graduating senior from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District in Spring 2022 served by College Now;

• have a high school GPA of at least a 2.5 (weighted) and have received a score of 18 or higher on the ACT or a score of 960 or higher on the combined verbal and math SAT;

• submit the 2022-2023 Student Aid Report (SAR);

• meet the eligibility requirements for the Federal Pell grant;

• submit a college or university Financial Aid Award letter, if available, and

• plan to matriculate (in order of preference) to Howard University, Tuskegee University, Alabama State University, or another Historically Black College and University approved for Federal financial aid pursuing a certificate, associate, or bachelor’s degree.

The UNCF Northern Ohio Inter-Alumni Council with the support of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association is proud to announce the Northern Ohio Scholars Program Scholarship. This scholarship opportunity, which is funded by the support of the area HBCU alums along with other local benefactors, is offered to current high school seniors, and HBCU-enrolled freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are permanent residents of northern Ohio.

This scholarship is named after Anthony H. Brown, an accomplished Cleveland area actor, and musician who honed his skills at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman University. His leadership and efforts, as Council President, have increased the awareness of HBCUs to the public, educators, and elected officials in the community as well as encouraged fellow HBCU alumni to become active with their local and national alumni associations.

​This scholarship is intended for the purpose of providing financial benefit to a deserving Greater Cleveland, Ohio area (Cuyahoga County) student matriculating at any of our Federally-recognized HBCUs whose major is based in the Performance Arts or Communication, to include but not limited to:
Acting/Theatre
Creative Writing
Dance
Television/Radio Production
Mass Communications
Film/Screenwriting
Vocal/Instrumental Theory/Performance

Joyce Terrell (1953-2012) lived a life that exemplified joyful giving, compassion, and sensitivity to the needs of others. She delighted in blessing her children, grandchildren, family members, friends, and anyone in need. Her joyful, giving spirit extended to all relationships developed in her lifetime. Joyce was a woman of exceptional strength, perseverance, and integrity with a pleasant, upbeat personality. Her beautiful spirit and love for life were endearing to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Therefore, this scholarship on behalf of her children, Katina Dent Douglas and Travis Dent, alums of Central State University, embodies her love for giving and contributing to the success of others. May her legacy of joyful giving, integrity, strength, and perseverance continue in the life of a deserving residing student, from the Northeast Ohio area, pursuing an education at Central State University, an HBCU and distinguished institution of higher learning.
